Rotherham: Fear of all the wrong things failed 1,400 children

27 August 2014

‘By 2005 few members or senior officers could say “we didn’t know”.’ It was ‘extraordinary’ that no-one on the lead Labour group on the council could remember discussing these matters. ‘The scale and seriousness of the problem was underplayed by senior managers’. ‘The police gave no priority to child sexual exploitation, regarding many child victims with contempt and failing to act on their abuse as a crime’. In Rotherham, no-one seemed to care. And when they did care, it was more about what others would think of them than about children as young as 11 being raped.

Professor Alexis Jay’s report says ‘several staff’ at Rotherham Council ‘described their nervousness about identifying the ethnic origins of perpetrators for fear of being thought racist; others remembered clear direction from their managers not to do so’. It said:

‘Within the Council, we found no evidence of children’s social care staff being influenced by concerns about the ethnic origins of suspected perpetrators when dealing with individual child protection cases, including CSE. In the broader organisation context, however, there was a widespread perception that messages conveyed by some senior people in the Council and also the Police, were to ‘downplay’ the ethnic dimensions of CSE. Unsurprisingly, frontline staff appeared to be confused as to what they were supposed to say and do and what would be interpreted as ‘racist’. From a political perspective, the approach of avoiding public discussion of the issues was ill-judged.’

There seemed to be a fear of man rather than of wrongdoing, perhaps even a true definition of political correctness gone mad, that led the council to ‘tiptoe’ around the issue of child sexual exploitation in the Pakistani-heritage community. The report found that there were just two meetings in 15 years about CSE – and they took place in 2011 when the abuse stretched back into the late nineties.

How did this go on for so long? The Jay report is worth reading in full, if only to get a measure of the way apparently well-organised organisations apparently working in a joined-up way managed to fail 1,400 children (at least). But something removed the urgency and made fear of breaking a taboo and being labelled politically incorrect the bigger thing. It was a fear of consequences, of anyone more important and powerful finding out that repeated allegations and internal reports were being ignored and someone being held responsible. ‘An issue or responsibility that belongs to everybody effectively belongs to nobody, and in the case of sexual exploitation of children in Rotherham, accountability was key,’ said the report.

If we are to prevent another Rotherham, public servants must never feel as though they will not be held accountable for doing nothing.

Remember that is the same nasty woman who didn’t hesitate to remove happy children from a couple who supported UKIP, what a hypocrite!!

  • Jane Manby

“If we are to prevent another Rotherham, public servants must never feel as though they will not be held accountable for doing nothing.”
My a…s there have already been dozens of other Rotherham already up and down the country.
People looking after their own backs and the backs of their friends more like.

“islam in a man is like rabies in a dog” Winston Churchill.

What would Churchill do with all the quislings on the Council and Police Force, hang them with the mohammedian child rapists and white slavers?

  • Mrs Josephine Hyde-Hartley

The raising a concerns policy is primarily about speaking up about important things that might otherwise be left unmentioned. Do these social workers have access to a decent raising a concerns policy? ie one that treats all stakeholders ( including ordinary members of the public) with equal respect ?

As far as I understand the raising a concerns policy will do for situations that on the face of it, would appear to be something of a conurbation of unmentionable awfulness.

Why are these workers so scared to take the concerns people ( especially women) raise seriously?

  • lojolondon

Ironically, the lefties never get tagged as ‘racist’ for saying that the majority of paedophiles are white males.
Note that if a single, elderly white male is accused of inappropriate contact with a single child, the police quickly inform the Biased BBC so they can film the event, search his house, get him in and question him, and he is mentioned in the press before defending himself, even if the allegation happened 50 years ago, and he has a valuable reputation to protect, that ensures his continuing work and income.
However, if a gang of brown males is accused by several victims of multiple acts of kidnapping, torture, violent gang rape, blackmail, etc. then our brave councillors sweep it all under the carpet, the courts will hide their names, and the brave BBC will refuse to identify them, for fear of ‘sparking a backlash’.

  • Jambo25

Anyone needing an emetic, or a good laugh, or both, should immediately look at CiF on the Guardian web site. There is an article by someone called Lola something or other. It does put partial blame on racism for Rotherham but white racism towards nice wee Muslims (sorry Asians) of course. Vomit inducing.

  • Spiny Norman

They that sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind. (For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. Hos. 8:7, King James Version.)

Something about Labour chickens coming home to roost methinks?

    • Jen The Blue

It is, but the modern Tory party has been complicit if not pro-active in it too.

Not that the idiots on the left will see the problem they have created as their fault.

      • Spiny Norman

Agreed but, let us not forget the hand that the slimy LibDems have in all this.
A more underhand bunch than you can ever imagine.

  • Spartanzz

Muslims are the problem, the sooner we ackowledge this, the sooner we acknowledge Islam and the Qu’ran is the problem the better.

Trying to shift the blame, trying to turn a blind eye, trying to protect muslims as a special status species, trying to enforce muslims on other cultures is causing global chaos. Even amongst themselves they’re causing chaos. Nothing to do with race, ethnicity, gender, everything to do with muslims and their deeply engrained attitudes hardwired into their DNA.

Left-wing liberals will continue to enforce political correctness upon others and muslims will continue to take advantage of their naivety.

  • AlecM

Cultural Marxism has succeeded in its aim; to destroy Western working class family cohesion and patriotism. Multiculturism involving the creation of a new overclass of islamic mysoginistic paedophiles fits in very well with the behaviour of the public school educated white UK elite.

Remember; the aim is to exchange decent Christian values with institutionalised depravity in all classes, not just the elite. This is because people who are compromised can be controlled.

  • Brian O’Driscoll

The great prophet Mohammed was betrothed to his bride Aisha when she was six, the marriage was consummated when she was nine, he was 52 at the time. Its in the Koran therefore it is true, which laws do you think apply ?

    • Cincinnatus

When the Mullahs took control of Iran among the first order of business was to reduce the age of consent to 9 years old (for girls only), after all they consider Mohammad to be the perfect human whom all should emulate.

Throughout the Muslim world child brides (to much older men) is common.

  • Cincinnatus

This warning from the Bishop of Mosul in Iraq, is too late for the girls of Rotherham (and don’t forget the victims in Rochdale, Derby and Oxford):

My “diocese is now run by radical Muslims and that “liberal and democratic principles are worth nothing here,” adding that “Islam does not say that all men are equal,” and if Westerners “do not understand this soon enough, you will become the victims of the enemy you have welcomed into your home.”

Will anyone else heed this warning?

    • Lydia Robinson

      In a word, no.

  • Solage 1386

The Left has abandoned and betrayed the white working-class! I’m working-class, and I will never forgive them for what they have done.

  • Jakeal

The cover up continues. The authorities, not the muslim community and culture, is taking the blame for the Rape of Rotherham. That’s how they treat women in islamic society, they are an incompatible culture.

    • Lydia Robinson

Just heard the Radio 5 programme with Nicky Campbell. A caller from Rotherham came on and pointed out that a certain “demographic” was engaged in this behaviour and that community should be drawn to the attention of the authorities, not the current blame game that’s going on of social workers or the police. Until that was dealt with, there could be no progress, he said. Campbell quickly shut him up by saying that it’s not a specific race trait and that more white men engage in pedophilia than other races and blah. The caller replies by saying: “It’s that kind of attitude that meant it got swept under the carpet to start with.” Even now, the discussion is being derailed by the PC Al- Beebaceera.

There are so many disconnects between reality and the spin for so many many years. Check out the Rotheram City Scrutiny panel reports in the 2005-7. This is about the collusion of all agencies in a politically correct rose tinted environment. Exactly the sort of positive speaking cross authority working approach pushed by Common Purpose under successive political regimes, both Labour and Tory. When you look at the lists of Common Purpose graduates in the area there are police, council officers, voluntary sector leaders and health officials. All learning the power of positive thinking through NLP… steam roller objectors to the process like the poor researcher censured for drawing attention to the problems in 2002. Common Purpose is part of the problem… but who will ask THE question?

  • Stephen Andrews

If you see the scrutiny committee papers from Rotherham council during 2005/6/7 you must see the disconnect from reality and the names of those with rosy glasses speaking the positive spin will often feature in the lists of Common Purpose graduates. Steamroller over objectors like the poor researcher suspended for making waves in 2002 – slap each other on the back and get a good report from the audit commission. Common Purpose is part of the problem and not contributing to the solution except for those drawing together for mutual support. Too many times have public sector workers tried to say the emporor has lost his clothes – this time the city lost its children. Police, voluntary services, council officers health workers all in common purpose and learning the power of positive speech through NLP. Who will ask the question?

  • Jambo25

Just watched Jack Dromey (Mr Harmperson) on Newsnight discussing this. What a creep. As sleazy as his missus.

  • rossco1111

Take this Islamophobic nonsense down right now.
It’s all lies started by the BNP.

    • Socialist Worker

‘Islamophobia’? If yu understand the nature of Islam and you are not scared by the prospect of it spreading, you are an idiot. Your United Against Freedom picture displays how out of touch with reality you are. Isn’t the UAF funded by muslime-loving politicians? Indeed it is. You are just an Establishment lackey and your cries for censorship are indicative of your agenda. The UAF is a front for the SWP (not the SWPE!), which is itself an anti-Working Class, anti-White operation. The BNP raised this issue for sure, but it is the likes of the UAF which is lying and pandering to paedophile immigrunts.

    • Ordinaryman

Provide us with some facts so that we can come to a considered opinion about it being lies instigated by the BNP, otherwise, your comments will come across as just so much hot air.

  • John Gerard

Don’t worry, everyone. Platitudes will be deployed, and nothing will be done. Normal service is resumed. Islamic r**e gangs? – as you were, fellas…

  • Save England

A major problem is the the UK police scum ( composed of cowards and bullies ) have adopted the LAPD’s motto of ” To Protect and Serve ” …………..unfortunately, they have confused the meaning.
They serve the lefist liberal PC scum and protect the vermin who are destroying ( have destroyed ?) the UK .

  • hereward

The man everyone has been told to hate (Nick Griffin ) warned about this and the PC BBC howled him into oblivion and the 1400 abused children in Rotherham as well . Yorkshire used to be called God’s country . Is it now Allah’s country ?

  • keith

oh dear i have been censored by the specie for pointing out the failings of the BBC web site, but readers go there and see if you can spot the politically correct beeb criticising Rotherham council but themselves not mentioning the ethnic background of those involved, i hope that gets past the commissar on the specie comments page

  • Socialist Worker

This should surprise no-one who knows of the level of corruption in the Labour heartland of Rotherham, nor indeed anyone who is familiar with the antics of the Islamic community. The invaders hate us – it is really that simple – and they use their superstitious nonsense to justify abusing our children. If it isn’t selling heroin to children, conning people out of money by professing to giving their words of honour (which of course is non-existent) in business transactions, then it is raping our children. The media now call child rape ‘grooming’ if it is pakistanis abusing indigenous children, or indeed they prefer to focus upon ‘celebrity’ perverts whilst ignoring the invader crimes altogether.

The South Yorkshire Police should be ashamed of their failure to protect our children, but then, they are so ‘politically correct’ that they would rather sacrifice all our children to foreign rapist scum than to admit that pakistanis are by nature criminal vermin, who have no right to be in the UK.

Until every last pakistani and their co-religionists are expelled from the UK, none of our people are safe. But don’t expect the police to do anything to protect us – they are too busy arresting anyone whop sounds the alarm, using the ‘politically correct’ banshee cry of ‘racism’ to silence people who dare to tell the truth any speak out for our people.

  • MrJones

“If we are to prevent another Rotherham”

There’s no singular “Rotherham” and there is no implied future tense. It’s been going on in scores of towns up and down the country for decades – exponential since c. 2000 ish – and is happening *today* in scores of towns up and down the country.

  • treacle

One thing we still don’t know, because no newspaper will say, is whether the victims were Asian, white British, or both. So we still can’t visualise exactly what has happened. I find it hypocritical that the media are attacking Rotherham for doing nothing for fear of appearing racist, while they themselves keep quiet about the victims for precisely the same reason.

    • Socialist Worker

Exactly! The media ignore the crimes of the invaders then attack those who do the same! Hypocrites!

  • keith

you might want to have a look at the BBC web site, which lists just a few of the cases that have come to court over the last year, Derby, Rochdale, Oxford in which young white girls have been raped sexually abused and trafficed by muslim Pakistani or afghan men, not anywhere in the report does it mention there race or religion, the BBC criticising Rotherham because of political correctness, yet continues to play the PC card itself, makes you proud of that great institution

    • Socialist Worker

The BBC promotes race mixing and ‘mutliculturalism’ (white genocide) in all its programming (and programming it is!) yet dares to fawn surprise when the obvious outcomes of liberal lunacy come to fruition. The BBC should be abolished and those responsible for the brain-washing of our children arrested forthwith. Not only the BBC, but a good many politicians and teachers too.

  • Steven Fuches

They are blaming the state, social services, each other, British Culture the dog the cat Elvis and the Jews but the thousands of perpetrators that GANG RAPED 1400 CHILDREN are walking the streets. Never do they mention islam or the muslime, Once again they have got away scot free.

  • fitz fitzgerald

… were compensation to be set at £1M per child the total would be impressive – but still sans anybody being held to account…

  • Davidh

This makes no sense. If people of ethnic origins were robbing banks they’d get prosecuted for robbing banks. It would make no difference where their heritage was from. There’s more to this than is being currently reported.

    • Steven Fuches

Have yo forgotten we are under sharia law, at least a form of it, anyway?

  • Dilip

Iraq or Britain? What’s the difference? Raping, looting and killing the infidel is what the cult preaches

  • andagain

How did this go on for so long?

I can think of another possible explaination. I think it might be a very good idea to look at corruption within the South Yorkshire police

  • bugalugs2

What the labour councillors trying to exculpate themselves by claiming ignorance fail to realise is that their own failure to know was their failing. As the senior people in charge it was their responsibility to make sure the people, culture and structures were in place to make it impossible that something of this magnitude would not have been escalated to them.

Maybe if they had more experience running businesses or other organisations they’d have known that.

  • StalwartoftheStalwarts

In the leftist worldview noticing non-white crime against whites is worse than the crime itself.

  • Lidlscanner

“white girl who was sexually abused by an Asian gang from the age of 12 was offered lessons in Urdu and Punjabi by her local council after her ordeal.”
Even though there are hundreds and hundreds of comments on the various threads that the Spectator has run on this scandal, and credit to it for keeping them open, is there anything that can be said that can explain this type of evil? An evil similar to that which the National Socialists subjected Germany to, and we are far from confronting it in any meaningful way.

    • Socialist Worker

I’m surprised she wasn’t arrested for ‘tempting’ the paedophile monsters – afterall, according to the muslimes, men can’t help themselves if a girl of any age isn’t completely covered in a bin bag to prevent arousing their lusts! That must be why very young children in pakistani colonies such as Bradford wear halloween costumes all year round. Islam is sick and those who make excuses for it are collaborators with an evil which has to be banished from our shores.

  • RavenRandom

Monstrous failure by the state. Crime is crime no matter the colour or religion of the perpetrator. I am rarely furious, but this and mid-Staffs, allied to the NOTHING that is being done to the useless, spineless ******** that allowed this to happen makes me want to man the barricades.

  • Dogzzz

As it was the labour party “rubbing our noses in diversity” which directly led to this outragiously offensive, abusive and evil mass racist gang rapes of young children by Pakistani Muslims, I feel it is time the rest of us rubbed labour’s noses in the consequnces of that diversity by prosecuting every singly police officer and civil servant involved in actively ensuring that hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of young girls were brutally and repeatedly gang-raped.

Prosecute all of them to the fullest extent of the law.

  • artemis in france

Thank you for mentioning the dread word “Pakistani” in your blog. The problem in Britain is that so few people feel free to tell the simple truth. It isn’t racist to state that thèse men were Pakistani. They were, and trying to dance around it won’t help. I believe the BBC, however, are still doing just that. Shameful.

    • noix

I think the religion is more to do with it than the origins. This crime was against Sihks as well as ‘christian’ girls. None of their own faith were victims.

    • Simon Fay

To be fair to the BBC the PM programme did announce it loudly enough to penetrate my horrified incredulous laughter over this long-running hidden-in-plain-sight horror show. The whole thing (and its sibling scandals in other parts of Britain) sounds staggering but I’m sure there’s even worse to come.

  • fundamentallyflawed

When a blog piece about S E X abuse won’t allow S E X in the comments then you know tha t the flag of freedom is truly fallen

  • Lidlscanner

It is a possibility that the mass rape occurring in British towns and cities is not so much about the sexual exploitation of children, horrible as this may be, rather it allows M^slims to engage in barbarous activity with complete and total immunity. Therefore, it should be interpreted as another component of the steady Isl^mification of Britain. This is why a public enquiry is necessary – one that does not hold back from looking at every aspect of this phenomenon and one that includes testimony from other Western countries that are experiencing mass M^slim rape such as Sweden.

    • Damaris Tighe

They won’t get much light thrown on the subject from Sweden – Sweden refuses to record the ethnicity of criminals.

  • sarahsmith232

‘Jack Straw, a Labor Party spokesman on police issues, differed, saying, “One of the purposes of good policing should be to dilute racial tensions rather than potentially inflame them.”‘
20yrs ago, 1995, Paul Condon, London’s police commissioner wrote to 40 black community leaders asking them to try to do something about the amount of muggings that black males were responsible for. Labour went ballistic, throwing out the racism tag left, right and centre. When Straw was asked by the Guardian to some up what he most proud of he said ‘If you are black or Asian, gay or lesbian, there’s no question your life has been transformed by Labour, and I’m very proud to have been part of that.”
It’s not just fear of being labelled a racist, it’s a question of what these people see as their purpose. They enter politics to enjoy being their ‘oppressed minorities’ great Messiah saviour protector figures. It’s an example of an extremely egotistical, selfish, self-serving person, ordinary Joe’s are nothing but throwaway dross to them, of zero consequence, even kids being targeted by homosexual paedophiles in the 70s, they allowed a gay paedophile feeding frenzy in care homes in Islington in the 80s when Margaret Hodge was council leader because they preferred to protect one of their favourite minority groups rather than the kids.
Same story again with a different ‘oppressed minority’ group this time. These people are not fit to run a sunday school, they should never ever be allowed near power again.

  • Slim Jim

‘If we are to prevent another Rotherham, public servants must never feel as though they will not be held accountable for doing nothing.’
I’m afraid that you have stopped short there, Isabel. What do you mean by ‘held accountable’? Until and unless there are criminal proceedings brought against those responsible, and their wealth confiscated (instead of taxpayers’ money) to pay for compensation to the victims, these events will continue. Don’t hold your breath though, because it will probably require a change in the law to make such charges specific.
We also require a whole lot of forensic .investigative journalism to shine a bright, shiny light into the reasons for this, but maybe the MSM is too scared? Find out more about the role of Common Purpose and where it fits into all this. Also, political correctness has reared its ugly head again – it is so destructive that surely it’s time to campaign vigorously against it – or is it too deeply rooted?
The current political class cannot go without blame here either. The last government tried to do something about the Baby P case, but it ended up with the main player receiving a large amount of compensation! What are they going to do this time? What a mess we are in!

  • BigMach

For Labour councillors up and down the country they have to remember that Muslims, in general, vote Labour. They would not want to upset the Muslim vote.

    • Save England

I’ll repost here as it’s more relevant .

I heard on Sky today that there were three million of the muslim scum in the UK.

How is it that such a small % of the total population can influence the Labour scum ‘s policies, surely the % of white trash and idiots that support Labour are not keen on the vermin changing the culture of the country ?

  • LawrenceinArabia

how much longer will the English put up with the mad destructive ideology of Multiculturalism / Political Correctness?

  • Ordinaryman

The additional worry is of course, where else is this going on? I also wonder how long this matter can be pursued before someone starts screaming “witch-hunt”, as we have witnessed in the past?

  • Lockstein13

You British are doomed to extinction…quite possibly even before the French.

Forget the labels (diversity, political correctness, tolerance): CHOOSE TO SURVIVE.

From the perspective of the United States, I can only say it seems clear most of you have already chosen to surrender. How sad.

(pssst…your actions in the future will speak louder than snotty replies now)

  • SonofBoudica

It was not political correctness. Labour identified the Asian community, principally Pakistani, as a core vote for that Party. Nothing, therefore, would be allowed which might be critical of any practices of that community. What matters the sexual exploitation of over 1,400 young white girls when compared with keeping Asians voting Labour?
