The View from 22 — Carry on Westminster, Lib Dem growing pains and Vatican scandals

28 February 2013

Is ‘inappropriate behaviour’ simply a way of life in Westminster? Following on from the Lord Rennard-Lib Dems allegations, Julie Bindel describes in this week’s Spectator how the Lib Dems are the worst offenders. On the latest View from 22 podcast, Isabel Hardman and James Forsyth share what it’s like to work in Parliament, and some of the inappropriate behaviour they’ve encountered. Why is that behaviour acceptable in Westminster? And are the Lib Dems really worse than any other party?

We also discuss this week’s political column on the Lib Dems’ growing pains and their transition from a third party to a cornerstone of government. And does their political operation have any tips for David Cameron?  Freddy Gray also joins to outline the rumours swirling around the Vatican, ahead of the conclave to select the next pope. What is the Vatileaks scandal? Is this just gossip or the contents of the next Dan Brown novel? Plus, Fraser Nelson discusses the Italian elections and why Nigel Farage could be the Beppe Grillo of UK politics.

“Inappropriate behaviour” is a modern invention to describe natural human frailties, flaws and lapses that in older, more pragmatic, less infantile, less “politically correct” times were dealt with by those involved without making the national news or involving police “Special Investigations Commands”. The nation has become trivial, the focus of the nation has become trivia. We are all on watch for “inappropriate behaviour” now, ready to lift our arms, point and shout “Miss! Miss!” in the primary school classroom that the left and feminism has created for us.

On the other hand demanding Casting Couch favours in Politics starts being a little odd in a party with Lynne Featherstone applying her stridency
